Momentum on Park Renewal

SVRA President, Jennifer Hunter, and Park Renewal Committee Chair met with the senior staff in Parks and Rec, Infrastructure on July 20, 2010.  Highlights include:

  • Updated schedule:  The consultation selection process willbe completed by Friday, July 23, so the consultant should be in place by mid-late August.  Community consultations are now expected in September and October, and, if required, in December.  Continue to watch this space for a new schedule!
  • The contract for the actual reonovation will be tendered in late January, so that work can begin as soon as weather permits.  The renovation itself will be STAGED so that the park can continue to be used.
  • There will be a walkabout at the park  at 2pm this Thursday with city staff that Andrew Ignatieff will report out on
  • Jennifer has (fingers crossed) succeeded in getting the city to commit to a new bulletin board for the park, in a size and location that suits better.  Don’t be alarmed if you see the old one being dismantled.

The Seaton Village website will be only occasionally updated and reviewed over the next two weeks.  If you have a comment or a question, be patient…we will get back to you in early-mid August.

July News Flash

First, Adam Vaughan is  hosting a community walk, tomorrow, July 10 that starts at Vermont Square Park at 11:30-1:30.

If you are interested, you can call Adam’s office or just show up on Palmerston Avenue, near the playground.

Secondly,  the Park Renewal Committee and the City are making progress on the selection of a design consultant for the park.  The deadline for submissions was July 8.  Now the city (together with three reps from the neighbourhood) will be selecting a firm.  Expect news about the selection by about August 10.

Third, in a few weeks we are going to be posting an ad for some administrative support for the SVRA.  The position may involve an honorarium, or some other form of compensation.   The post will be right here on this website.  We are looking for someone who can develop and maintain an excel membership list over at least 12 months, plus someone who can coordinate volunteers.  If you have any early ideas contact us at

Finally, mark August 25 6pm in your calendar!  The plan is to have a ‘Sing Thing’ – a marching, singing party from outside Scoop and Bean to the Vermont Square Park.  Wind instruments, brass, percussion, even pots and pans are all welcome.  The main song for the marching band will be “When the Saints Go Marching In,” so start practicing!  More detail will be posted in the area and online in August.
