Dear neighbours, due to the overwhelming response from our residents, we are closing down the garbage dumpster tonight.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, and to all the neighbours who helped clean up Vermont Square Park.  We will be posting any information on future garbage collection on this site.

As a resident of Seaton Village, you:

  • may bring your usual green and grey garbage bins
  • may NOT bring blue bin recycling materials.
  • may NOT dump household items or home renovation materials.
  • MUST double bag all your garbage
  • MUST put the garbage in the dumpster – PLEASE RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOURS WHO DO NOT WANT YOUR GARBAGE SITTING OUTSIDE THEIR HOMES.

Currently, this is the ONLY garbage pick up planned.

The cost is a suggested $5 per bag to recover the costs  associated with renting the dumpster and disposal costs.  We also encourage people become members of the SVRA, and will offer sign-up on site ($20 per year, per household).

Garbage Disposal During Strike

Today, the City of Toronto announced that the Christie Pits ice rink (among other areas throughout the city) would be designated as a temporary drop off site for municipal waste during the garbage strike of 2009.  The use of our public parks to store garbage is not a positive development in the negotiation of municipal workers and the City and health of the immediate surrounding area is a concern.

To minimize the use of our parks as dumping grounds, the Seaton Village Residents’ Association is organizing a one time garbage removal for our neighbourhood early next week.  On Monday, June 29th, a garbage bin will be placed within Seaton Village for a period not exceeding eighteen hours.  During that time,  residents of Seaton Village may dispose of their green and grey garbage bin waste for a suggested donation of $5 per bag (to offset the cost of bin rental).

On Monday, June 29 at 4:00 PM to Tuesday, June 30 at 9:00 AM, you:

  • may bring your usual green and grey bin garbage bins
  • may NOT bring blue bin recycling materials.
  • may NOT dump household items or home renovation materials.
  • MUST double bag all your garbage
  • MUST put the garbage in the dumpster – PLEASE RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOURS WHO DO NOT WANT YOUR GARBAGE SITTING OUTSIDE THEIR HOMES.

The location of the temporary waste bin will be announced through this website on Monday, June 29 at 3:00 PM.

Christie Pits Temporary Garbage Site

Temporary fencing is starting to go up around the the Christie Pits Ice Rink and outside the Alex Duff Pool as it is expected that the City is to announce that Christie Pits will be designated as a temporary garbage dump site during the ongoing municipal workers strike.  This has been done, despite assurances from the City of Toronto Deputy Mayor, Joe Pantalone, that “Christie Pits, nor any park, will not be used as a garbage dump.”

As a response, the Friends of Christie Pits has, in addition to a lot of positive community involvement and communication with the media, started an online petition requesting the City of Toronto remove Christie Pits and other city parks from the list of temporary dump sites.

Those interested in signing the petition are encouraged to do so here.
